Warm, reflective, and quietly hopeful, Before the Work Begins captures a group of neighbors standing at the edge of a neglected city lot and imagining what it might become. Their attention is not fixed only on the debris, weathered fencing, and overgrown ground before them. They are looking toward possibility.
With its bold geometry, layered figures, radiant sunbursts, and rich earth-toned palette, the artwork is reminiscent of Harlem Renaissance paintings and murals that celebrated Black life, collective strength, cultural memory, and the promise of a better future.
